Final fight & EBN

Once all three commissions are turned in, the Brimstone Witch fight waits at the altar. She will not let you rush it, though. Until you have cleared all four Exo Mechs, right-clicking the Brimstone Witch altar summons nothing; instead the witch shows up in person and waves you off. On the first three clicks she drops one line at a time, in order:

  1. “It is not yet time. There is still another enemy blocking your path.”
  2. “Go piece together that pile of mechanical toys of yours, then defeat him.”
  3. ”…What? Do I need to repeat myself?”

From the fourth click on, she stops talking. Each click deals 250 damage and bursts a ring of brimstone fire at your feet.

Defeat all four Exo Mechs and the altar summons the Brimstone Witch normally. While the EBN scene is playing, the altar cannot be clicked at all.

Once the chain is done and you hold the Proverb, this fight swaps to a full story script, and nearly every line reads like she is settling an old score. Which line plays depends on a few things: whether you have the Proverb equipped, whether Halibut is at your side, your health when the fight starts, and whether this is a first encounter or a rematch. The main-route lines are excerpted below by combat beat.

BeatConditionLine
SummonProverb equippedYou… you actually came wearing that ring… Very well. I will show no mercy.
SummonProverb not equippedHahaha… This moment… I have awaited it for so long.
StartVery low healthYou already look to be on your last breath.
StartLow healthYour technique still requires improvement.
StartDefaultHow strange. You should be dead already…

With the Proverb equipped the summon line is orange; without it, yellow.

Third brimstone hellblastWielding such… aberrant… power in a mortal vessel… To have come this far, you are indeed worthy of respect. You are skilled… but when will you realize you are merely attacking a plume of fire in vain?
Summoning the brothersIt is time you met my family. They failed on the path to becoming… ‘other’. Do not follow their example. It is time you met my family. Should you die at another’s hand, I will keep your soul here.
Phase 2Are you certain you do not wish to beg for mercy? Are you certain you do not wish to beg?
Fourth brimstone hellblastStand still and face me!(same)
Seeker ringYour power comes from external sources. As you are, you are nothing… It reminds me of that hypocrite.(same)
Fifth brimstone hellblastThe scales of victory are… uncertain. You only need to stand still for a moment to change this, understood?(same)
Second sepulcherIf only one of us can live today… who do you think I want it to be?(same)

Desperation ①JUST… STAND… STILL… YOU… SMALL FRY!
Desperation ②Don’t get arrogant—I was merely toying with you before!
Desperation ③coughcough… I admit, I am not in peak condition today.
Desperation ④It seems… I have lost. Meeting you… has truly been a blessing.
Acceptance ①This… is the happiest I have been in a hundred years…
Acceptance ②Perhaps… you truly can end this damned era.

The original third acceptance line is suppressed; that beat triggers the EBN scene instead (see below). Rematches and Boss Rush have their own variants of these lines.

Once all three commission weapons are turned in and you have the Proverb, each weapon’s item description gains a short account, in the witch’s own voice, of where it came from. All four are official in-game text:

The wood of this crossbow is hewn from a pitch-black coffin buried for a century.
It reeks of an earthy stench that simply won’t wash off.
Down there, it served to suppress a horror that even I found difficult to handle.
Against such things, pure destruction is meaningless. They cannot be killed.
Fire the wedge. Pin them back to the earth and force them into silence.
As for why you throw the crossbow first?
Hah… If the guest isn’t tainted by the scent of the casket, how will the coffin know who to collect?

This wretched blade is dull because it is not meant to cut flesh.
When I was still an apprentice, a mouth that would never close grew upon my teacher’s heart.
He died later, yet that heart kept beating. With every beat, the mouth screamed,
and one person around us simply vanished.
To survive, I had to gouge that heart out before its next beat.
Even now, it hungers to hear the sound of a heart being carved out again.

Find it heavy? Good. It should be.
It is laced with excessive gold and wreathed in Brimstone flames,
all to lock down the six restless ghostly hands upon the blade.
Those three idiots tried to dismember and stitch themselves together to delay their own ‘recovery’…
but they ended up as a twisted monstrosity that knows only how to strangle.
Grip it tight. Once the Brimstone suppression fails, the first neck they will snap is yours.
Snapping the neck of whoever touches the blade… that is the only instinct they have left.

Mortals call this magic, but I call it… borrowing.
This is no spellbook; it is a high-density cage.
Every page seals a horror that once silenced entire city-states into death.

Achievement: “[BE] Ending: The Eternally Burning Present” · Subtitle: The past is consumed by fire; an aberrant body touches eternity. · Music cue: Sins Wedge

Beat the Brimstone Witch after finishing all three commissions and this fight does not close the usual way. At the exact moment her third acceptance line would play, the screen cuts into the EBN scene. Under Infernum, the matching congratulation beat leads to the same place. If your save has not recorded EBN yet, a later rematch can re-enter this ending when the fourth desperation line is reached.

The witch appears this time as a flickering shadow, her body no longer able to contain the fire. Halibut sees at once that these flames are sealing off the past, but the witch calmly lays it all out: as long as a single ember of brimstone fire remains, “she” cannot die, yet her consciousness will be ground down in that sea of fire, with thirty years left at most. So she asks the player to take her place and carry the brimstone fire on, or the whole world burns to ash once her mind is gone. Halibut refuses outright.

SpeakerLine
HalibutAre you kidding me…
HalibutThey’ve vanished… Is this fire… sealing the past?!
HalibutThis witch… her power is truly no ordinary magic.
HalibutWas she holding back during the fight? No matter. Even against this kind of power, I’m confident I can kill you all over again.
Brimstone WitchI cannot die… but… this is close enough.
Brimstone WitchYou have done well… Perhaps… you truly are the “Era’s Chosen” he spoke of, the one worth waiting for.
Brimstone WitchSo… I have one last thing to ask of you.
Brimstone WitchAs long as a single ember of brimstone fire exists in this world’s past or present, ‘I’ will not perish.
Brimstone WitchBut my consciousness… in this endless sea of fire… it will eventually be worn down to nothing.
Brimstone WitchI can last 30 more years, at most.
Halibut…So, you want him to replace you?
Brimstone WitchThat’s right. It is the only way.
Brimstone WitchWhen my consciousness fades completely, the entire world will be incinerated.
Brimstone WitchBesides… if you wish to end this era, a mortal vessel is far too fragile…
HalibutAbsolutely not! Let him become a monster like you?! Over my dead body!

The screen shakes hard and Halibut’s shout comes up as a choice box. Only one option can be clicked here:

OptionStateResult
(Stop Halibut)AvailableHalibut: ”…Is this your choice?” “I understand…” then the witch’s farewell begins
(Remain silent)Greyed outCannot be selected

With no Halibut at your side, no one questions her and no one steps in. The witch delivers the same request to you alone, then moves into the farewell.

SpeakerLine
Brimstone Witch…It has been a long time since anyone has made it this far.
Brimstone WitchI will not die… but this is close enough.
Brimstone WitchYou have done well… perhaps, you truly are the “only one of this era” he spoke of, the one worth waiting for.
Brimstone WitchTherefore, I have one final request for you.
Brimstone WitchAs long as a single ember of Brimstone Fire remains in the past and present of this world, “I” shall not perish.
Brimstone WitchBut my consciousness will be gradually eroded away within this endless sea of fire.
Brimstone WitchHad I not met you, I could have held out for thirty more years at most.
Brimstone WitchThis is the only way.
Brimstone WitchOnce my consciousness completely dissipates, the entire world will be reduced to ashes.
Brimstone WitchBesides, if you intend to bring an end to this era, a mortal shell is far too fragile.

Whether or not Halibut is present, both paths join into the same farewell. A full-body portrait pushes in, the screen turns red, and a ring of fire closes inward as she speaks eleven lines and finally burns away:

SpeakerLine
Brimstone WitchIn this long life, I have seen countless dawns and endings.
Brimstone WitchFlames devour eras, but also illuminate new beginnings. I thought this time would be no exception.
Brimstone WitchI never expected to have a companion on this final road.
Brimstone WitchFor me… an ending like this… is more than enough.
Brimstone WitchYour existence proves that this land has not truly withered.
Brimstone WitchI believe you will walk further than I ever did.
Brimstone WitchAnd I… I can finally rest.
Brimstone WitchDon’t look back. There are more important things ahead of you.
Brimstone WitchJust… think of it as me finally reaching my own destination on this long journey.
Brimstone WitchAnd so… this is enough.
Brimstone WitchGo on, small fry.

As the farewell ends, the achievement notification pops. In multiplayer, EBN state syncs to your companions.

If you carried Halibut into the run before EBN, the witch’s farewell takes the legendary Halibut out of your bag along with her, as if it vanished at her side. The thread is not cut, though. Later, when you kill the Primordial Wyrm, Halibut is waiting there in her ocean-style dialogue box:

I’m waiting for an idiot.

Welcome back…

With that she returns to your bag. If the bag is full, she drops the lowest-value item in it to make room. The wider arc of this side thread is on Halibut.

Reaching EBN leaves a set of lasting changes on the character and the world.
